A lot of allotment

Filed under: allotment — david at 1:16 pm on Sunday, June 11, 2006

Caroline (not me I hasten to add) has had her name down for an allotment for a while with a couple of groups. The guy at Beighton rang on Monday and offered her either a half-plot or a full plot. We had a drive down and decided on the full plot because it has buildings on-site and they’re needed to assist with the collection of rainwater (there’s no water on site otherwise).

This is the allotment as we got it. The greenhouse is behind me – you can see the apple trees and the weeds. I’ll post another picture when we’ve finished weeding!

This link (hopefully to google maps – just tested – it works) shows where the allotments are. Ours is at the south end of the site (i.e. the bottom of the area), about four in from the main road.

We spent a couple of hours weeding and tidying up yesterday in a pretty-much packed day. So, as well as working on the rc boat and playing with Woodhouse Band at St Lukes Hospice Summer Fair, I got to find some muscles I hdan’t used for a while. They’ll be the weeding muscles.

I now know more about crop rotation in small plots than I did yesterday morning. Lime after potatoes and plant brassicas. I’d better start off a new bookmark category…

As for the boat, last week I cut out the window apetures and you can see now where it’s going…

Also, I got this image whilst at St Lukes. The garden there is beautiful – lots of running water and very restful, no doubt giving the people there something pleasant to reflect upon. I liked the frog…

It was moved

Having got my stuff back from the Chesterfield Canal Society of which I’m now a member, the canal was apparently moved in the late 1890’s which stacks up with the other information I’d got, and let’s face it, the Society should be pretty much the definitive source :-)

I’ve had a photo of the old path of the canal accepted as a geograph and intend getting some more. Part of the old route at the Renishaw end is on a permissive footpath that crosses the Sitwell estate and is part of a DEFRA nature walk. I’ll try and cover that soon.

I’ve also splashed out on a new camera – a Canon EOS350D. I’m still finding my way around it, but I’m hopeful!
